ICS Impulse, Tips from the Expert – Part 2

This video course describes and demonstrated how to ensure stimulation of the correct plane (horizontal, LARP and RALP) with proper demonstrations of each. The importance of video replay is discussed and training mode is introduced as an effective method to learn the proper technique for lateral head impulses. Leigh McGarvie ends this course with patient evaluation utilizing lateral, LARP and RALP.

After this course, the participant will

Describe how to adjust the analysis to show missed saccades
Identify common reasons to delete a trace from the analysis
Describe the proper positioning for LARP and RALP using head position feedback
Differentiate between vHIT and SHIMP

About our Speaker: Leigh A. McGarvie is a Biomedical Engineer at the Institute of Clinical Neurosciences, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Leigh has more than 25 years experience in the development, design, construction and implementation of vestibular test equipment for clinical assessment and research with vestibular diseases and function. Leigh has many research publications and has worldwide experience working with clinicians, researchers and students.

Event Details

Hearing occurs in the brain; the ears are the way in. The purpose of this session, therefore, is to provide a brief overview of auditory neural physiology and to propose two, family-friendly counseling narratives for connecting the dots between the brain, hearing loss, technologies, and the child’s development of language and literacy. The goal of this narrative counseling is to increase the child’s wear-time of technology, which is a critical variable in obtaining a listening and spoken language outcome.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this seminar the participants will be able to:

Summarize what we now know about the development and integration of the auditory brain.
Detail two, family-friendly counselling narratives for connecting the dots between the brain, hearing loss, and use of technologies in order to increase the child’s wear-time.
Explain how auditory brain development is the foundation of listening, language and literacy for all children.
Discuss the hearing health care provider’s role in supporting a child’s literacy development.

Dr. Flexer is a past president of the Educational Audiology Association, the American Academy of Audiology, and the AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language.

My favorite point the presenter made was that multiple layers of screening are to be avoided. Intuitively, re-screenings seem worthwhile because we expect the false positive rate to decrease, but as she points out the false negative rate will also increase. It's better to proceed with diagnostic testing once the baby fails a screening to keep the false negative rate as close to zero as possible. She didn't specifically address re-screens while the baby is still at the hospital, but I'm assuming she would endorse those, and they seem to be standard practice.
