Course introduction:
In appreciation of Tinnitus Awareness Week (February 7 – 13, 2022) please join our presenter, Dr. Dany Pineault as he provides a thorough and detailed overview of tinnitus for the clinician. This recorded session is accredited by the American Academy of Audiology for one contact hour. A live 15 minute Q&A will follow the presentation.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this seminar the participants will be able to:
• Describe tinnitus in terms of definition, classification systems, prevalence, etiology, neural mechanisms and clinical manifestations.
• Explain evidence-based assessment and management strategies.
• Discuss effective counseling strategies with this population.

    Dany Pineault

    AuD

    Dr. Dany Pineault is a passionate audiologist with over 20 years of extensive clinical experience, in both private and non-profit organizations, specializing in the management of problematic tinnitus and hyperacusis. He is also an adjunct assistant professor at A.T. Still University at the Post-Professional Doctor of Audiology program. He teaches the theoretical and clinical foundations of tinnitus and hyperacusis evaluation and management course. He also serves as a research advisor for Statistics Canada and has co-authored three Health Reports on hearing health problems. Finally, he is a leading content expert and has published articles on the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on hearing problems and evidence-based assessment and management strategies for the tinnitus and hyperacusis patient with the Hearing Journal and the Phonak Audiology Blog.

    My favorite point the presenter made was that multiple layers of screening are to be avoided. Intuitively, re-screenings seem worthwhile because we expect the false positive rate to decrease, but as she points out the false negative rate will also increase. It's better to proceed with diagnostic testing once the baby fails a screening to keep the false negative rate as close to zero as possible. She didn't specifically address re-screens while the baby is still at the hospital, but I'm assuming she would endorse those, and they seem to be standard practice.

    I used to ask my patients, have you fallen in the last year. Now, I will ask "Have you fallen in the last 6 months" as part of my case history.
