In 1991 Dr. Marion Downs and Dr. Jerry Northern established the Frontier’s in Hearing Symposium to support research and clinical practice education for hearing professionals focusing on pediatric hearing assessment and treatment. Marion Downs passed away at the age of 100 in 2016, but her legacy lives on with this biennial meeting attended by many world renowned leaders in pediatric audiology. Participants included pediatric audiologists, audiology researchers and students – who benefitted from scientific lectures delivered by experts from around the globe.

It is understood that standardization is required to accomplish a quality UNHS program in order to achieve the goals set forth. One key component for successful UNHS worldwide is the use of AABR. This presentation will investigate implementation of a newborn hearing screening program as well as current programs that have been successful in reaching global goals quantified by quality assurance measures. We will also review the Wyoming Newborn Hearing Screening (NBHS) Program and discuss the advantages of using AABR as the primary measure for NBHS.
Learner Objectives:
At the conclusion of this seminar the participants will be able to:
• Identify two components to the process of a UNHS program that allow for meeting global goals.
• List two advantages of AABR vs OAE for UNHS.
• List two types of quality assurance measurements that quantify UNHS goals have been met.
• List two ideas to improve or update a UNHS program.
• Discuss the efficacy and success of AABR in a newborn hearing screening program.
• Describe how a state-wide NBHS program utilizing AABR as the primary measure functions

Dr Kalley Ellis is the audiologist for the Wyoming Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program, as well as a working as the clinical audiologist in her practice in Casper, Wyoming, specializing in pediatrics. Kalley received her doctorate from Idaho State University and has worked in a multitude of settings throughout her schooling and professional career, including hospital, educational, and pediatric ENT practices. As the audiologist for the Wyoming EHDI Program, some of Kalley’s duties include providing training and supervision to nursing staff and midwives on NBHS protocols and procedures. She also provides training to the child development centers throughout the state on late onset hearing loss screening protocols and procedures. In her clinical practice, Kalley sees children birth-21 years of age and provides newborn hearing screenings, diagnostic hearing evaluations, as well as hearing technology fittings and follow up.

Dr. Melissa Richardson has presented on the state, national and international levels in person and via poster sessions, remote learning opportunities and has earned recognition including a national award from the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program. During her 30+ years of experience in the field of audiology, Dr. Richardson has provided services for newborn hearing screening as an educational audiologist for newborns through high school as well as training medical staff, HeadStart/Early HeadStart staff, volunteers to perform hearing screening and electronic data management system development. She continues to dream of the day there is UNHS.WW (universal newborn hearing screening worldwide)

Verification of hearing aid gain and output is a critical aspect of the hearing aid fitting process. Join our experts as they discuss key elements and recent advances of these real- ear measures. Additionally, they present their views on the use of verification to successfully manage challenging cases to optimize outcomes. Participants will have the opportunity to pose questions to the speakers after each presentation and during a panel discussion at the conclusion of the meeting

Dr. H. Gustav Mueller holds faculty positions with Vanderbilt University, the University of Northern Colorado and Rush University. He is a consultant for WSAudiology and Contributing Editor for AudiologyOnline, where he has the monthly column “20Q With Gus.” Dr. Mueller is a Founder of the American Academy of Audiology and a Fellow of the American Speech and Hearing Association. He has co-authored over ten books on hearing aids and hearing aid fitting, including the recent three-volume Modern Hearing Aids series, and the clinical text on Speech Mapping and Probe Microphone Measures. Gus is the co-founder of the popular website www.earTunes.com, and resides on a tropic North Dakota island, just outside the city of Bismarck.

Dr. Lindsey Jorgensen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of South Dakota. At USD, she is graduate level faculty, is a graduate clinical educator, and serves on various university committees. In these capacities she teaches graduate level amplification and aural rehabilitation courses and supervises students in direct audiologic patient care in the clinic. Dr. Jorgensen mentors AuD students and conducts research in the areas of hearing aids, hearing assistive technology along with the interaction between hearing device use and cognitive ability. Lindsey is also on the Board of Directors for the Academy with a 2019-2022 term.

Dr. Scollie is a Professor in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and the Director of the National Centre for Audiology at Western University, in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Dr. Scollie’s research focuses on development of fitting and verification algorithms and procedures for high technology hearing aids, evaluation of outcomes, and knowledge translation of evidence to clinical practice, hearing aid prescription, and early hearing detection and intervention.
