Course introduction:
Conducting hearing tests on young children has always been a challenge, especially when these children have other special needs. Children with Down Syndrome often present with fluctuating hearing loss, and they require regular hearing monitoring. This lecture will share some modification considerations when conducting behavioral hearing assessment on children with Down Syndrome, and management options for this group of children.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this eseminar the participants will be able to:

  • Describe the nature of hearing and hearing loss in children with Down Syndrome.
  • List some modifications/techniques in conducting behavioural hearing assessments on children with Down Syndrome.
  • Discuss hearing management options for children with Down Syndrome.

  • Dr. Jenny Loo

    Dr. Jenny Loo

    Dr. Jenny Loo Hooi Yin, obtained her Master of Science in Audiology (Distinction) from the University of Southampton, United Kingdom, in 2004. She was awarded the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) Research Scientist Fellowship in 2007 to pursue her Ph.D. at the Ear Institute, University College London, United Kingdom. Her Ph.D. research area was in auditory neuroscience.
    Dr. Loo is an Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore, where she played an instrumental role in starting the inaugural MSc Audiology course in Singapore in 2013. Currently, she is the Program Director for this postgraduate Audiology program. Other than teaching Audiology students, she is also involved in teaching Speech and Language Pathology students at NUS as well as at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT).
    Dr. Loo is not only an educator but a researcher. She has a wide range of research interests in the areas of auditory brain processing, pediatric hearing impairment, and population hearing health. She has published numerous research papers in international peer-reviewed journals and had held a few grants in the past as principal investigator. She also supervises students for research at MSc and Ph.D. levels.
    Clinically, Dr. Loo has a joint appointment at the National University Hospital as a Senior Principal Audiologist. She has extensive clinical experience assessing and managing children with hearing loss. One of her areas of clinical expertise is in cochlear implant management, and she is also well sought-after for her expertise in the diagnosis of Central Auditory Processing Disorders in children at national and international levels. Dr. Loo’s passion for Audiology extends beyond her clinical skill. She champions community audiology projects by helping the department to expand audiological services in the community through Mobile Hearing Clinics and Satellite Hearing Clinics.
    At a national level, Dr. Loo is appointed as the chairperson for the Allied Health Professional (Audiology) panel at the Ministry of Health (2016 till present), overseeing the development of audiologist professionals, and promoting hearing health and public awareness in Singapore.
