Diagnosis of pathologies within the peripheral and central vestibular system, including the cerebellum and brainstem is affected by a thorough clinical history and also a targeted bedside examination. Physicians and other healthcare providers should be aware of the characteristic eye movements commonly seen in these patients and must also be prepared to perform a focused and effective clinical examination.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this seminar the participants will be able to:
• Describe some concepts about nystagmus and other eye movements
• Perform a very focus and effective bedside examination
• Describe the cerebellum role in most common eye movements abnormalities
• Diferentiate between a central or a peripheral cause of vertigo.

Dr. Cal is a board-certified otolaryngologist. His clinical practice is heavily weighted toward to
medical otology (clinical and surgical) and vestibular medicine (balance disorders) with a
particular interest and expertise in care of patients with combined disorders of hearing and
balance, such as BPPV, Méniere’s disease, vestibular migraine, bilateral vestibular hypofunction, endoscopic ear surgery and cochlear implants. He also has a special interest in the otopathology of the temporal bone and its relationship with vestibular disorders. He is post-graduated in Otology/Neurotology Fellowship at Harvard Medical School in Boston (USA). In Brazil, he holds the position of associate professor of Otolaryngology at Centro Universitário do Pará. His teaching activities are focus in clinical and surgical training in Otology and Neurotology at all levels, medical/graduate students and residents. Regarding his researches and publications, they are mostly based on BPPV and clinical examinations of the dizzy patients. Over the past years, he has been working as international speaker for several multinational companies, including pharmaceuticals and medical technology corporations.MD
